At iSmile Orthodontics, we believe in providing non-extraction orthodontics to straighten your smile. Our experienced orthodontist uses palatal expanders to ensure that your teeth have enough space to move into their proper positions, preventing you from needing and extraction and promoting your health and smile long-term. We invite you to call us at 219-769-6691 to schedule your consultation with Dr. Thomas Surber and learn more about non-extraction orthodontics in Crown Point, Indiana.
Many orthodontists recommend removing teeth to create the space needed to straighten the remaining teeth. However, this can create a number of problems both immediately and long-term. Some of the problems of removing teeth include:
- The need for an oral surgeon, sedation and a period of time to recover
- The risk that the spaces where the teeth were removed will reopen later in life
- The loss of support for your facial contours
- Potential bone loss and deterioration of your smile
Dr. Surber has a different philosophy. By performing palatal expansion to widen your dental arches, he can move your teeth into their optimal position without requiring any of the teeth to be extracted. This palatal expansion provides a cosmetic and a functional result, allowing your teeth to move easily into their proper positions and adjusting the bit so that the teeth fit together and function properly. By expanding the upper arch, the lower arch also expands so that it can be treated without the need for an extraction as well.
What is a palatal expander?
Palatal expanders are orthodontic appliances, which are placed into the mouth to widen the upper jaw. They work by gradually stretching the soft cartilage of the palate. Palatal expanders may be removable or fixed (non-removable) depending on your individual needs and preferences. We will be happy to provide you with more information about palatal expanders during your visit with our orthodontist and team.
